The Zone

by Sensei Mike Pepe

We've all heard about a strange place called "the zone". What is it? It can't be described as a "what" but more as a mind body link. A time when your mind is so in tuned with your body that you experience a oneness, a harmony between you and the world around you that allows you to perform flawlessly. During an event where it seems the world around you is in slow motion and you can move through its existence (sort of like a time warp) complete your goal and return to the noisy action of the event you're in. The truth is you don't know you've been there till its over! Then you look back and say," wow I did that"?

It might be tough to "harness" the zone, to pull it out at any time, but you can put yourself in a position to better your chances, of reaching that state of conciseness. I think the difference between some people is how often they get there. You don't have to live there (mental overload) but how often can you reach that feeling.

This would mean that you have to practice meditation (controlling your thoughts). Practice visualization (seeing things in your mind) and practice concentrating on those thoughts, holding them in your mind, don't let them jump! (Don't channel serf) focus on your thoughts, see clearly the details like colors and left or right side ahead.

These are exercises we can all practice during the meditation we do at the beginning of class. You should also practice focusing on your thoughts at home when it's quiet and there are no distractions. These exercises will help you open the door to "the zone" and your more apt to enter.

You need to visualize clearly, your best effort in order too later, perform your best that's how I see finding the "zone". Prepare yourself (your mind) and the chances are better you'll find it.

As always,
Just a warrior rambling!
Sensei Mike
